Vanilla pods (or beans) are actually the fruit of an orchid and contain over 250 flavour compounds, giving it an incredible complexity of flavour and aroma that no synthetic version can come near to.

It is also one of the most labour-intensive crops in the world, commanding the second highest price, after saffron.

There are over 800 different genus of orchid, from nearly every continent in the world, but Vanilla Planifolia is one of only three to produce a commercially valuable fruit.
